Heisman Race: Week 5

It’s hard to ignore the numbers Caleb Williams is putting up, leading his team to a 5-0 record thus far. Photo: John Leyba, USA Today

  1. Caleb Williams, QB, USC

It can flip that easily. Williams had a 6 TD performance against Colorado in the win, throwing for 403 yards on a 75% completion rate. That combined with Penix accounting for 0 TDs is enough to put Caleb back on top here.

  2. Michael Penix, Jr., QB, Washington

It’s a very slight edge for Caleb Williams over Penix right now. They had the same passing attempt line on Saturday - 30/40, but Penix did not record a TD on the day as he threw for 363 yards. There are still plenty of big games for both to be played in the exciting PAC-12 this season.

  3. Bo Nix, Jr., QB, Oregon

Nix had another great stat line on Saturday, throwing for 290 on 27/32 for 4 TDs and no INTs. That means he’s the 3rd PAC-12 quarterback in this top 3 - something that’s bound to change as these teams play each other over the course of the season. For now, the senior QB has the Ducks rolling right along and has firmly put himself in the conversation for New York.

  4. Quinn Ewers, QB, Texas

Quinn had a really good day against Kansas, throwing for 325 yards on 71% completion rate and accounting for 3 total TDs. He did throw his first INT of the season, on a late first half possession. Ewers’ Heisman chances can either get a huge boost or could fade entirely depending on his performance against Oklahoma this week. If it’s anything like his play in last year’s Red River game, he will be in my top 3 next week.

  5. Jordan Travis, QB, Florida State

Travis and the Noles had the week off. They’ll get Virginia Tech this week in an opportunity to pad his stats. He’ll likely need an undefeated season in order to surpass the quality of candidates ahead of him on this list.
